Still confused about superbills, out-of-network therapists, and what it all means? Here are the answers to a few questions that can help you better understand how SuperBill for therapy reimbursement works.
So, what is a superbill in therapy exactly? A superbill for therapy and mental health services is a document that itemizes the services rendered by a provider. It’s similar to a receipt and includes patient and provider information, all related costs, and key details like diagnosis and procedure codes. These codes are required for insurance payers to reimburse patients.
SuperBill makes health reimbursement claims easy for patients and providers. SuperPay is a secure platform that links patient payments to out-of-network insurance claims. Providers can avoid the lengthy wait to get paid by insurance and charge their full rate up front, and patients automatically get their claims filed for reimbursement. But SuperBill is so much more than that! Your clients will have the full support of our team of insurance experts, who provide:
We’ll review your clients’ insurance benefits to ensure a seamless process. Our in-house experts delve into the nitty gritty details and can provide an estimate on how much money they’ll get back.
You and your clients won’t have to worry about filing claims or tracking them ever again! We’ll handle everything so you can sit back, relax and focus on what matters most — providing excellent care to your clients.
Claim denials can be time-consuming, stressful, and difficult for therapy providers and their clients. We’ll handle any complications that arise during the claim filing process. We’ve got your back.
SuperBill makes your out-of-network reimbursement easy so you can save time and money. When you pay for your therapy using SuperPay, we automatically handle every part of the insurance claims process. Or if you prefer, you can choose to pay for SuperBill's services on your own (without SuperPay).
Regardless of which option is right for you, you will receive:
We review the details of your health insurance plan so you understand your coverage. We can even review your Explanation of Benefits (EOB) documents after claims are filed and parse through all the healthcare lingo for you. No more Googling for hours just to understand your benefits!
We review your therapy superbills, ensuring accuracy and checking for errors before we file your claim. This increases your chances of receiving insurance reimbursement for therapy and prevents many frustrating and time-consuming claim denials. We turn your superbills into reimbursement claims and file them electronically with the insurance company on your behalf. But we don’t stop there! We continue to track your claims until you get reimbursed.
You’ll no longer have to deal with the headache of claim denials. We handle the back and forth with your insurer and get more information from your therapist if needed — you don’t need to get involved. Our team of insurance experts handles follow-up calls and filing appeals if necessary.
When a provider signs up for SuperPay, all of their self-pay (or private pay) patients can use SuperPay to get their claims automatically filed. If the provider does not accept SuperPay, therapy patients can either invite their provider or sign up for SuperBill’s services on their own.

SuperPay is always free for providers and for their patients when they link their bank account.
If a patient links a credit or debit card instead of a bank account, or pays for SuperBill’s services on their own (without SuperPay), they will be charged 2.9% of their bill to cover the cost of SuperBill's services.
For example, for a $200 therapy session, the cost would be $5.80.
Insurance companies provide an Explanation of Benefits, or EOB, to a patient whenever they process a medical claim on their behalf. It gives details of the medical treatments or services the insurer covered or paid for the patient.
